| Finally In Control of Migraines |
I had never suffered with headaches or migraines until I had just entered my thirties. But when they started to come, they came hard and fast. My doctor tried giving me other pain killers but nothing seemed to touch them. When he first suggested that marijuana might be an effective pain killer, I was hesitant. Not because the idea of smoking cannabis was all that offensive to me but more because I didn’t want to turn into mush every time I had a migraine. I finally decided that the pain wasn’t worth it anymore, and after all, who’s productive when they’re lying in the dark with a cold cloth over their face? So my doctor wrote me a prescription. Here are a few things I quickly learned.
Choosing which type of cannabis you’re going to use to get rid of your migraines is enough to give you a migraine! There are many different strains and doctors can either prescribe a certain kind or they can prescribe a general amount. If you can choose your strain, and don’t know which to choose, the distributor should be able to recommend a good strain. I have found that it doesn’t really matter which strain I use. If I have a migraine that smoking cannabis will help, any strain seems to do just fine. However, in my experience, it does depend on the type of migraine. I have found that if the migraine becomes too bad, or comes on too quickly, nothing will help. Not even cannabis.
Migraines come on in different people about as differently as the people themselves. I, like other people, have different kinds of migraines. When one starts, I will usually be able to tell how bad it’s going to get, what my level of functionality will be, and how much pain I will be in. While cannabis does seem to help with most of my migraines, and definitely more so than any other pain killer would, there are still some migraines that marijuana won’t numb. Unfortunately I think in these cases, I need to just accept that some migraines are just here to stay. Thankfully, they don’t come around that often.
My doctor was right. Cannabis definitely does way more for my migraines than codeine or other painkillers ever did. And my initial fears about becoming mush were quickly erased. Truthfully, I feel more aware when I use cannabis for my migraines than I ever did on prescription painkillers. Of course, patients on medical marijuana have to always be aware that using this type of prescription does have side effects and it is a prescription to be used responsibly. But even if I can’t drive, I can still move around my house and clean up if I need to – migraine free, most of the time! |

| Cooking With Cannabis |
You can also medicate with cannabis in the form of what is called edibles: cookies, brownies, and other food products. When you ingest cannabis, it goes into your intestines, then passes through your liver. Your liver processes THC into a by product called 11-hydroxy-THC, which then travels to the bloodstream and then to your brain. 11-hydroxy THC is thought to be four to five times more potent than regular THC. This is why edibles are known to be more potent when compared to inhaled cannabis. Edibles are also thought to be more potent when compared to inhaled cannabis. Edibles of all kinds are available at Healthy, Wealthy and Wise and we also will be featuring cooking tips, recipes and safe kitchen practices here in the newsletter.
You can make just about any dish you choose with marijuana. Cooking with marijuana is a great alternative for those who need marijuana for medicinal purposes but can’t, or don’t like to smoke it. There are some unpleasant health side effects that come with inhaling cannabis smoke and eating it is a way to enjoy it without those side effects. It’s important to note that there are a few things to take into consideration when cooking with marijuana. The first and most important thing to remember is that cooking with cannabis has much different effects than smoking cannabis. Results take longer to feel, but they often stay longer and in some instances, are even felt more so after eating cannabis. Because of this, it’s very important that if you’re eating food that contains cannabis, that you wait one hour for the results to kick in before eating anymore. Eating too much can also have unpleasant side effects so it’s important to pace yourself. Also, the general rule of thumb for cooking with marijuana is to use one gram per serving. This is enough to deliver the effects without overdoing it. You can usually use both the leaves and the bud, unless a recipe calls for otherwise. Recipes will also usually say whether the cannabis needs to be chopped, diced, or pureed but in most cases you can usually grind the cannabis to a fine powder and add it to whatever the recipe calls for. This is known as marijuana flour. Sometimes, leaving the leaves intact can make for a nice presentation too! You can make any meal gourmet, even simple morning toast, by adding things such as marijuana butter. This is such an easy way to incorporate cannabis into just about anything you want! So whether you need to take the edge off that migraine first thing in the morning, or want to relax at night with a wonderful gourmet supper, you can incorporate your medicinal marijuana into any meal. To make marijuana butter, place one pound of butter into a saucepan. Allow it to melt and add one cup of marijuana flour and stir until the cannabis is completely mixed with the butter. Bring up to a boil. Once the butter has come to a boil, lower the heat and allow to simmer for about half an hour. The next step is to strain the butter through a fine cheesecloth into a larger bowl. If desired, the cannabis in the cheesecloth can be used for another ½ pound of butter. After that, the cannabis should be discarded. Allow the butter to cool in the refrigerator. Because the THC from the cannabis will be reacting with the butter, the butter will solidify on top and there will be liquid remaining in the bottom of the bowl. It will take two to three hours for this to happen. Once there is a solid layer on top, the butter simply has to be scooped out from the liquid into a separate bowl and used as regular butter would be. This recipe for cannabis butter will give you about ½ gram per teaspoon of butter. The suggested use is to begin with two teaspoons of butter and add more only if necessary. |
